The Penn Environmental Group was founded in 1971 by students who were actively involved in the 1970 Earth Day celebration. The initial purpose of the group was to collect recyclable materials from Penn students, faculty, and staff, and for nearly twenty years the Penn Environmental Group provided recycling service on campus.
The group became extremely successful in the mid-seventies due to an ever-increasing group of dedicated volunteers and donations and funding from CHOP, the University, and SAC. Penn Recycling recycled up to 50 tons per semester, and made a large enough profit to donate hundreds of dollars to local chapters of environmental organizations, such as the Sierra Club.
