I'm applying to Penn - tell me more about Music at Penn
You should first know that Music at Penn is very much different from other colleges. The Ivy League schools do not offer merit or academic scholarships - therefore, calling the Penn Band Office and mailing out audition tapes probably won't help you much in gaining admission to the University of Pennsylvania. However, you shouldn't hesitate to contact our group and others to learn more about them - the bulk of college is spent outside of the classroom. Pick a college that offers what you want outside of the classroom, as well as inside!
That said, Penn offers a lot to matriculating students who wish to continue music on the collegiate level. With our website (www.pennband.net), you find the Penn Band, (the "Marching Band"/Pep Band), one of the largest, oldest, and most-active student-run organizations on campus. Other student-run instrumental groups include the University Jazz Ensemble, The Mask-and-Wig Band, Penn Musicians Against Homelessness, and pit orchestras for theater/show groups such as Penn Players, Bloomers, Quadramics, and Glee Club. The Penn Music Department offers instrumental opportunities, including the University Wind Ensemble and Orchestra.
