Dance arts council (DAC)
What is DAC?
The Dance Arts Council subcommittee consists of all PAC groups whose main mission is performing shows in the dance genre of the performing arts. Currently DAC consists of 14 groups with focuses ranging from classical technique to cultural dance and everything in between. Each group performs once or twice a year on campus in addition to performing many times in the Philadelphia area and at guest performances. Although well versed in many styles, dancers here at Penn continue to improve by taking classes at local studios or by hiring professional dancers to teach technique classes for the company.
Classes combined with numerous rehearsals for shows take up a lot of time for the groups, but in their spare time, groups often teach master classes for the Penn community in order to share their talent and help educate others about their specialty form of dance. This is not only a wonderful way for the dance groups to learn from each other, but it also builds quite a sense of community. In January, DAC groups participate in the Emily Sachs Dance benefit – an event that raises money for asthma research as a tribute to a talented Penn dancer who suffered from severe asthma. The benefit really helps unite the DAC groups – as all dance groups not only perform in the benefit, but they also each volunteer to help with certain other aspects of the show.
