Day 1: Team Time Trial

Friday morning, Catie Richards, Bianca Grecu, and Sara Schewel started at about 930 AM, representing UPenn in the Womens D1 TTT (the nationals are broken down into D1 and D2). They all three donned the retro sunglasses they had purchased at the hardward store the day before and set off. The first 2.5 miles of the course had a strong tailwind, and the girls rocked it. Then came the first turnaround and the fantastic tailwind soon turned into a brutal headwind. In spite of the wind, they passed the start finish with an impressive split, just 30 seconds down on the top time. Rolling up and down the hills, the cruised the rest of the way. There time of approx 46 min. was good enough to secure them 12th place or 16 teams. A great result for the team with only 3 riders (4 start usually, 3 to finish). (Winning time was around 40:20)

The obscene headwinds called for a full team rotation and Adrian, Johann, Alex and Josh were all pulling, echeloned to the right and left of the lead rider according to the wind angle. After reaching the top end of the course, the speed switched from approx 21 mph to about 40 mph as they rode the tailwind into the finish line in a time of approx 36:30. The guys placed 16th of 21, also a decent showing. (a mere .3 second away from 15th). The winning time was approx 33 min, with the majority of times in between 35:15 and 37:15.
