Alternate Spring Break 2005

MISSION

To help Habitat construct a home for a family of 4, to impact the Charleston community, and to meet new people from Penn.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Cleared brush, rubbish, and stumps in preparation for a future house

Put up the exterior walls, most of the interior walls, and most of the OSB

Learned to use a chain saw and other construction tools

Gained confidence in our own abilities and learned about each other

Gained appreciation for Habitat and

learned about Americorps and other opportunities to volunteer

FAVORITE MEMORIES

Bonfire on the last night with everyone who had worked on the house

Going to the cabin and meeting the Iowa ASBers

Putting up 2 huge walls before lunch

Carriage rides

Exploring the market

Web exercise

Bowling

Playing mafia

Doing cartwheels on the beach

Sitting in a pretty graveyard

Ghost tours

Jumping into the dumpster and goading Yan into jumping into the dumpster

Denise (the woman whose house we were constructing) presenting us a cake

that said “People like you make the world a better place.”

Working on the OSB boards and general teamwork in construction

Last night of sharing gifts and discussing what we learned about each other
