Alternate Spring Break 2002
Olive Hill Adult Learning Center

MISSION
Our group went to Olive Hill, Kentucky to provide our services to their
local community centers that provide the people in Carter County with GED
tutoring, a food bank, a clothing store, various classes, childcare and
more. We worked closely with Sisters Sarah and Joanne, who live in the
area and allowed us to stay at their church.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Our work on ASB included helping with renovations at the Olive Hill Adult
Learning Center and the Grahn School Community Center. Some of us tutored
GED students at the Learning Center, and some tutored English as a Second
Language to Hispanic factory employees. We were fortunate enough to have
a lot of interaction with the residents of Olive Hill and learn about their
lives there.
ENTERTAINMENT
| On our first night in Olive Hill, we went to the Mountain Music Festival
at Carter Caves State Resort Park and heard some Appalachian folk music.
We also explored the caves at Carter Caves, and some us even when on a
six hour long cave-crawling expedition. Others went hiking at the Natural
Bridge State Resort Park, and spent an evening in Lexington, the bluegrass
capital of Kentucky. We were invited to go to a local Holiness Church with
Margie, our friend from the Adult Learning Center. We met lots of people
from the community and Shivani picked up a twelve year old boy. We also
perfected our bowling skills at Grayson Lanes and Games, though none of
us could beat Sister Joanne. Another night, we had a bonfire to make s'mores,
and made friends with David from Knoxville. We concluded our amazing week
with a no-talent-allowed talent show. Richard, Rachel, Lauren, and Kate
took home the grand prize of toy handcuffs. |
