Alternate Spring Break 2001

Appalachian South Folklife Center
Pipestem, West Virginia


MISSION

To help elderly residents by spending time with them and sprucing up their homes through constructing an insulated storage room, cleaning up trash, and putting on a beautiful new coating of green paint (with masterfully applied white trimming).

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

     

    Learned about problems afflicting West Virginia from a West Virginia ranger.
    Made friends with people from other schools. 
    Made friends with people from OUR school!
    Beautified a house and yard in need.
    Learned to build fires.
    Became expert chefs. 

ENTERTAINMENT

     

    Cooked the best food we've eaten all year! 
    Went to a rockin' folk lore concert, heard a banjo
    Learned about the art of blacksmithing
    Hiked the New River Gorge (river is one of the only north-flowing rivers!)
    Hiked through a forest full of interesting wildlife
    Played in waterfalls.
    Played card-games that kept us laughing
