Alternate Spring Break 2001

Max Meadows
Volunteers for Community
Max Meadows, Virginia

MISSION

Help the community of Max Meadows, Virginia by doing a variety of local jobs around the town.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Shoveled a load of rock to form a building foundation
Cleaned up the elementary school
Repaired the bridge at a local church (Locust Walk)
Cleaned up trash along the road
Repaired a fence
Milked cows
Met an amazing community of people
While our labor was gratefully accepted, the trip was truly a cultural experience for a group of "city kids" to live out in the mountains of western Virginia

ENTERTAINMENT

There was little to do at night, and games of Taboo, football, and soccer were common place. Many evenings were spent discussing a wide variety of topics, and picking the brains of our seniors. We went to the movies one night (invited to a sneak preview - for free!), visited a farm, and had several beautiful drives and walks. We went to the highest mountain in Virginia, and were essentially on a week-long tour in the company of Olin.

FAVORITE QUOTES

"There's plenty of food, take more." - The wives at every single meal, forcing us to stuff more wonderful southern cooking into our mouths
