A non-refundable deposit of $175 for driving trips and $225 for flying trips will be due immediately upon accepting your spot. The remainder of the cost ($125 for driving and $175 for flying) will be due at the Ice Skating event on Saturday, February 2. Drivers will receive a discount of $25. Gesundheit! Institute
Hillsboro, WV
Cost: $300 ($175 deposit)
Founded by Patch Adams in 1972, the Gesundheit! Institute provides health care for seriously ill children, placing emphasis on generosity, compassion, and fun. This vibrant environment resonates with energy and hope. It was the inspiration for the 1998 film starring Robin Williams, Patch Adams. In your week at Gesundheit!, you will "clown around" with children at the clinic and help with construction efforts for the new Teaching Center and Clinic.
Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless
Cincinnati, OH
Cost: $300 ($175 deposit)
Explore issues of homelessness, hunger, and poverty in an urban setting. The GCCH works to improve services for homeless individuals, educate the public about homelessness, and empower homeless individuals to advocate for their civil rights and housing needs. Engage in service opportunities with several of GCCH's 45 member organizations. Participate in advocacy efforts for promoting systemic change.
Everglades and Biscayne National Parks
Florida City, FL
Cost: $400 ($225 deposit)
Surrounded by a unique ecosystem in the wetlands of southern Florida, you'll work on environmental conservation projects in both the Everglades and Biscayne National Parks. Work may include removal of invasive plants, coral reef preservation, or participation in an archaeological project. If you're lucky, you may spot some rare and endangered species, such as the American crocodile, the Florida panther, or the West Indian manatee.
(Please note that there are dogs living on the hostel premises, so volunteers with strong allergies to canines might want to consider other trips)
Hands On New Orleans
New Orleans, LA
Cost: $400 ($225 deposit)
Continuing ASB's commitment to Katrina relief, your work with Hands On will have a lasting impact on the relief efforts in New Orleans. Participate in house gutting, mold removal, clean-up efforts, and more. Learn about the political and social implications of Hurricane Katrina, assess the progress that has been made over the past three years, and discuss next steps in the rebuilding process. Finally, get to know the unique character and charm of the city of New Orleans.
Sea Island Habitat for Humanity
Johns Island, SC
Cost: $300 ($175 deposit)
Over the last 29 years, Sea Island Habitat for Humanity has worked to build homes in this small beach town near Charleston, SC. In just one week you will have a tremendous impact as you work to build a home for a family in need. After work, enjoy the beautiful scenery and friendly community that Johns Island has to offer.
Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity
Lynchburg, VA
Cost: $300 ($175 deposit)
After an outstanding experience in Lynchburg last year, ASB will return this year to continue in efforts to build affordable homes for the residents of the Greater Lynchburg region. Located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Lynchburg has one of the lowest GDPs of the metropolitan areas in Virginia. Lynchburg HFH welcomes Penn students with its close-knit community and an enthusiastic approach to community service.
Iredell County Habitat for Humanity
Statesville, NC
Cost: $300 ($175 deposit)
In this small town where 16.1% of people live below the poverty line, there has been a growing need for affordable housing. Iredell County HFH works alongside families to build homes that are both comfortable and reasonably priced. Located just 40 minutes from Charlotte, NC, Statesville has the charm of a small town with access to an exciting city. You will work with Habitat for Humanity to build homes and form ties with the Statesville community.
