COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENT WITH PENNPALS

Penn Figure Skating held a community service event with the PennPals group at the Class of 1923 Arena this past Friday. A number of PennPals mentors and their 1st-5th grade mentees gathered at the arena for a event full of skating, food and fun! The mentees were instructed by members of Penn Figure Skating and were skating around the rink like pros by the end of the session. We look forward to holding a similar event with PennPals next year!

We would like to thank the Class of 1923 Arena for donating the ice time for this event.

PENN QUAKER CLASSIC RECAP

The 2006 Penn Quaker Classic took place on Saturday, 4 March 2006 at the Class of 1923 ice rink. While the event ran smoothly for the most part, we were not without our technical difficulties. Our rink's antiquated music system got us off to a rough start, but we eventually got everything worked out and finished 30 minutes ahead of schedule.

As in our other two competitions this season, we racked up valuable points by placing in the top 5 in almost all of the events our skaters skated in. By the time the team maneuver events came around, we were in a tie with Princeton for 5th place. Team maneuver has traditionally been strong for Penn teams, and it was no different here. We finished 2nd in Low Team, 4th in Intermediate Team, and 1st in High Team, giving us enough points for a solid 5th place finish. But more importantly, we were 3 points away from 4th and 7 points away from 3rd, the first time we have legitimately been a contender amongst the top teams.

This was the last intercollegiate competition for both Emily and Rusty, as they are graduating this year. They both went out in style, as Rusty skated his short and free skate with lots of triple jumps, and both Emily and Rusty contributed to the 1st place finish of our high team.

The grueling 14-hour event ended with everyone freezing in the rink but having a good time. Congratulations to the team!
